STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT (GRADES 3rd to 8th)
| PACT | The Palmetto Achievement Challenge Test (PACT) was a State of South Carolina test given to every student in the state in grades 3 through 8 in four areas: English/Language Arts and Math (since 1999) and Science and Social Studies (since 2003). A replacement testing system will be implemented in the 2008-2009 school year. Scores for each of the PACT tests were rated at four levels: "Below Basic," "Basic," "Proficient" and "Advanced." Achieving a "Basic" score indicates that the student had "met minimum expectations" for student performance based on the curriculum standards, while "Proficient" meant the student has "met expectations." Independent research has found that South Carolina's performance standards are some of the toughest in the nation with our scoring levels set higher than in other states. Thus a score of Basic on the PACT may be equivalent to a score of Proficient in other states. The federal No Child Left Behind law establishes criteria for schools to achieve "Adequate Yearly Progress" (AYP). AYP for schools and school districts requires that significant progress be made every year in raising the percentage of students scoring "Proficient" or better on the PACT English and Math tests. |
| NAEP | The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) is the only nationally administered test that can accurately compare student achievement from state to state. Reading and mathematics tests are administered in odd-numbered years to a representative sample of students in each state in grades 4 and 8 |
STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT (HIGH SCHOOL)
| HSAP | High School Assessment Program (HSAP) is a state set of tests administered to South Carolina high school students to meet the requirements of state and federal laws. HSAP assesses South Carolina academic standards in English language arts (ELA) and mathematics that students have had the opportunity to learn by the end of the tenth grade. The ELA and mathematics tests each have four achievement-level scores: Levels 1, 2, 3, and 4. A student must score Level 2 or higher on each test in order to meet the graduation requirement. The presented data is the HSAP passage rate for second year students (pass both the ELA and math subtests in their first try). Students first take the test as a second-year high school student and have multiple opportunities to pass both tests. |
| Graduation Rate | The graduation rate in South Carolina (reported in State Report Cards) is a four-year cohort graduation rate using locally collected data. It divides four-year graduates earning regular diplomas by first-time ninth graders four years earlier, adjusted for transfers. The cohort is based on only those students high schools are able to track. There are several other graduation rate definitions in use. See Graduation Rates and Definitions for information on the graduation rates currently in use. The presented data includes all of the reported rates in general use. |
| SAT | Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) administered by The College Board. The SAT is an implied learning test that measures how students think based on their experiences both in and out of the classroom setting. |
| ACT | The ACT college entrance exam is a test of curriculum-based and classroom-based achievement with subtests in English, Math, Reading and Science. The ACT is the predominant college entrance exam in half of the states, while the College Board's SAT dominates the other half. While the percentage of high school graduates taking the ACT in Greenville County Schools and South Carolina continues to increase, the predominate college entrance exam in South Carolina is the SAT. |
| Postsecondary Enrollment | High school completers enrolled in college freshman classes. Completers are anyone who completed the required high school coursework in a high school or adult education including those that received a certificate as well as a diploma. Freshman class enrollment includes 4-year, 2-year and technical college degree programs as well as diploma and certificate programs at other schools or enrollment in the armed forces. Only those enrolled in the summer or fall semesters after leaving high schools are included. |
